CAIRO – 29 December 2024: Russian President Vladimir Putin has apologized to his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, in a phone call for the recent crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines flight in Kazakhstan, which killed 38 people with 29 survivors.

A statement issued by the Kremlin on Saturday stated that the Russian air defense systems were firing near Grozny airport while the plane “repeatedly” attempted to land there last week but did not confirm that one of the systems hit the airliner.

Investigations are ongoing with Russia launching a criminal probe into the incident, while Azerbaijani state prosecutors reaching Grozny to participate.

The Kremlin also noted that “relevant services” from Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are conducting joint investigation in the crash site near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan.

The plane, with 67 passengers onboard, was en route from Baku to Russia’s Grozny, when it diverted toward Kazakhstan and crashed while attempting to make emergency landing.

Aliyev told Putin that the airliner was subject to “external physical and technical interference,” according to a readout of the call provided by the Azerbaijani leader’s press office.
