Loyal American Airlines
passengers should take note that one of their Philadelphia Admirals Club
failed its health inspection in August, and the public are just hearing about it now. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), one of American Airlines’ largest bases, has been rated by many as one of the worst airports in America.

“Roaches in the Breakroom”

As first reported on View From The Wing, Gary Leff has claimed that American’s employees have had enough and have dubbed their airport ‘Filthadelphia.’ There have even been reports of maggots at the gate and roaches in the break room. These claims relate directly to the B and C Admirals Club and first surfaced in August.

Simple Flying reached out to American for comment. However, they had not responded by the time this article was published. However, they did share this response, according to View From The Wing.

Taking care of our customers is our main priority. We took immediate action upon receiving the inspection report from our Philadelphia International Airport Admirals Club in Terminal B/C. We’ve been working closely with our lounge partners and the Philadelphia Department of Health to address the results of the inspection and to inform our current and future processes.

This latest food safety scare comes as several lounges across the United States have recently failed their health inspection. Simple Flying previously covered how American Express’ largest Centurion Lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) failed its health inspection, with several new and repeat violations. The lounge in the airport’s Concourse E got a rating of just 69, just below the 70 required to pass. This happened just ten months after it opened to the public.

Philadelphia International Airport

With four runways, the airport is one of the busiest in the United States and operates more than 500 daily departures to more than 130 destinations. Following American Airlines’ merger with US Airways, the airline grew to hold a substantial presence at the airport and now operates a range of domestic, short-haul, and long-haul international flights.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, American Airlines has a 48.46% share of all airport operations, almost four times more than its closest competitor (Frontier Airlines, at 13.83%).
