More than 63 million people are under weather advisories due to a massive snowstorm affecting the United States.

The National Weather Service is warning that this could be “the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade” for certain regions of the country, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights across the nation.

Cancellation and refund policies of airlines for the winter storm

In the event of a climate emergency, airlines have certain travel exemptions. Here are some policies of the most popular airlines in the United States, in case you have plane tickets to travel within the next few days.

American Airlines

Customers traveling to, through, or from cities affected by severe weather may change their flights without incurring the regular change fee. This applies to eligible flights of any kind from Jan. 4-6 that were purchased before Jan. 1. The origin or destination city cannot be changed. For more information, visit the airline’s website.

Delta Air Lines

Central American travelers with airline tickets between Jan. 3 and 6 can change their reservations to, through or from 12 airports without incurring the usual change fee — free of charge. For more information, visit the airline’s website.

Southwest Airlines

Similarly, travelers with airline tickets for flights to any of the 14 affected airports can alter their travel plans without additional charges. For more information, visit the airline’s website.

United Airlines

Customers with travel scheduled between Jan. 5 and 6 from the nine affected airports, can make changes at no additional cost, as long as the tickets were purchased on or before Jan. 2.
