Virgin Airline Crew Rape Accused Denied Bail

The man accused in the alleged rape of an Australian airline cabin crew was further remanded by the Nadi Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Ilaisa Tanoa Degei, 24, a farmer in Navosa, appeared before Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of rape.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Siteri Naika represented the State.

The court heard that on New Year’s Day, (January 1), Degei allegedly committed the offence in Nadi.

The court also heard that Degei allegedly sexually assaulted an Australian airline employee by touching her private parts without her consent.

He clearly understood the charges read out by the court.

Bail has been rejected as it was a national interest.

Magistrate Tikoisuva has transferred the case to the High Court in Lautoka and ordered Degei to remain in remand custody.

“Case be transferred to the High Court and his bail application can be filed there,” she added.

The case has been adjourned to January 20 at the high court in Lautoka.
