ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Alaska Airlines recently announced new seasonal nonstop flights to Anchorage from Detroit and Sacramento, as well as resuming nonstop service flights between Fairbanks and Portland.

Starting on June 14, weekly roundtrip flights to and from Detroit and Sacramento will begin, with the Fairbanks-Portland route starting on May 15.

Scott McMurren is an expert in Alaska travel with over 30 years of experience in the travel business — primarily in Anchorage, as well as the author of the Alaska Telegram.

In an interview with Alaska’s News Source, he explained while the addition of nonstop flights to Detroit and Sacramento is a new market never served by the airline, they will be limited to only one day per week.

“This Saturday only service, that’s how Alaska [Airlines] starts the service,” McMurren said. “They’re still for the second year in a row they’re doing Anchorage to San Diego Saturday only [and] from everything I’ve heard from travelers that it’s a really great flight. I think that these two flights from Anchorage will be a nice addition.”

In addition to the newly added flights, there are 12 nonstop destinations flying between Anchorage set to resume this summer. Those include Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, New York JFK, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle.

According to an Alaska Airlines press release, additional seasonal routes through Sacramento to Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Orlando, and Tucson were also announced this week starting in January and running into the spring season.

Also announced are nonstop flights between Boise and Orlando during the winter season, in addition to a new service linking New York JFK and Puerto Vallarta running through April.

Kirsten Amrine, Alaska Airlines vice president of network planning and revenue management, said in a statement the new routes are designed to provide passengers more options to vacation around the state of Alaska throughout the summer.

“The nonstop flights from Detroit and Sacramento will put travelers right in the heart of Alaska by skipping a layover, and Portlanders can enjoy nonstop service to Fairbanks,” Amrine said.
