The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a new Conflict Zone Information Bulletin (CZIB) advising airlines against flying to, from, or over Russian airspace amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

This guidance applies to all EU airlines, as well as third-country carriers authorized by EASA, advising against operations in Russian airspace west of longitude 60° East, at all flight levels.

According to EASA, while no EU airlines currently operate flights to, from, or over Russian airspace, several third-country carriers continue to fly through these high-risk areas.

The EU aviation safety agency’s recommendation remains in effect until at least July 31, 2025, though it may be updated or withdrawn based on future assessments of the security situation.

EASA, in collaboration with the European Commission, will continue to monitor the conflict closely and adjust its safety guidance as necessary.

EU Conflict Zone Alerting System

The EU established the “EU Conflict Zone Alerting System” after the downing of flight MH17 to provide consistent safety advice regarding conflict zones. Since its launch in 2016, the system has facilitated cooperation among EU Member States, EASA, and other aviation stakeholders to monitor risks and issue timely safety recommendations, ensuring enhanced protection for European passengers and operators.
