Senators question airlines over alleged zip code-based pricing

A bipartisan group of senators is questioning whether airlines are charging passengers more for tickets based on their zip codes.

The senators claim Spirit and Frontier airlines are using customers’ personal information to impose additional seat fees depending on the wealth of their neighborhoods.

The airlines have denied the claims.

U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said they sent a letter to the airlines urging them to stop collecting personal information before displaying fees.

The letter followed a recent hearing in which the airline executives “refused to clearly answer questions from (the senators) about the ways in which the airlines collect and use passengers’ personal information before they determine fees,” a news release from Sen. Hassan said.

“In our view, your executives’ responses were evasive, vague, and require significant clarification,” the senators’ said in the news release.

They requested a response from Spirit and Frontier by Feb. 25.
