With summer fast approaching, Northern Hemisphere airlines are fine-tuning their 2025 schedules to ensure they have capacity on profitable routes. The latest to adjust services is Canadian carrier Porter Airlines, which has announced a new seasonal route connecting Montreal and Newark that will commence in June this year.
More connections to the Big Apple
On Wednesday, Porter Airlines (Porter) announced it is expanding its presence in the New York area with the addition of a new service connecting Montréal Trudeau Airport (YUL) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Porter already operates services between Newark and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) and Ottawa International Airport (YOW).

When the route commences on June 1, flights between Montréal and Newark will be operated using a De Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop. Initially, the service will operate once daily and increase to two times daily for the peak summer season between June 15 and September 7, 2025. The schedules are:
- Montréal-Newark: Daily except Saturday, depart YUL at 18:35 and arrive at EWR at 20:15, and on Saturday, depart YUL at 19:20 and arrive at EWR at 21:00.
- Newark-Montréal: Daily depart EWR at 16:15 and arrive at Montreal at 17:55.
- Peak season: Daily depart YUL at 13:10 and arrive at EWR at 14:50. Depart EWR at 10:45 and arrive at Montréal at 12:25.

Porter offers multiple seamless connections to its domestic network via Montréal, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Halifax. The new services between Montréal and Newark are also timed to enable connections to Porter’s partner Air Tansat’s European network beyond Montréal.

Andrew Pierce, Porter’s vice president of network planning and reporting, said Newark Airport has been a key part of the airline’s network since the launch of the Billy Bishop-Newark service in 2008. He added:
“Adding a nonstop route to Montréal will make the New York area even more accessible for our passengers, giving them more options to choose from when planning their trips to the Empire State.”

For passengers living in the Toronto area, Porter is launching a new service this spring from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ ) to New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). The service will commence on May 1 with up to three daily roundtrip flights between Toronto Pearson and LaGuardia.
Porter has the right-sized fleet for the job
With a mixed fleet of De Havilland Dash 8-400s turboprops and Embraer E195-E2 jets, Porter has the right aircraft to suit its various destinations. The service between Toronto and LaGuardia will be operated with an Embraer E195-E2, offering an elevated traveling experience with no middle seats and free, fast WiFi for all passengers.
The onboard experience is truly an elevated experience compared to most domestic services, with a selection of complimentary premium snacks and beer and wine served in glassware included in the ticket price for all onboard. Passengers selecting the PorterReserve fare also enjoy priority check-in, extra legroom seats and ticketing flexibility, while Porter Classic passengers can purchase those options à la carte.
Fleet data from ch-aviation shows that Porter Airlines has a fleet of 72 aircraft with an average age of 8.2 years. The data lists 29 De Havilland 8-Q400 turboprops and 43 Embraer E195-E2 new-generation regional jets, with the Embraer aircraft having an average age of just 1.4 years. The Embraer aircraft have a two-class layout of 132 seats, including 36 in economy plus and 96 in economy, while the De Havilland Dash 8s have 78 seats.
