The airline is evaluating a new route between Washington and Mallorca
United Airlines is considering launching a new direct route between Washington D.C. and Palma de Mallorca, as part of its ongoing expansion in the Balearic Islands. This potential new service would complement the airline’s existing route between Palma and New York-Newark, further enhancing its network in the region.
United Airlines explores new Washington-Palma route
According to Antonio de Toro, United’s Sales Manager for Spain, the airline is optimistic about increasing its offerings to the island. “Next year, or within the next two years, we could expand weekly or seasonal frequencies. If the route continues to grow, we may see a similar situation to what we’ve observed in other European destinations, such as Venice and Nice,” de Toro stated.
Since the launch of the Palma-Newark route in 2022, the connection has quickly become one of the airline’s most popular for American travellers. With a 75% increase in seat availability since its inception, United Airlines has decided to boost capacity for the summer of 2025 by adding more frequencies and extending the season through to October 25.
The expansion of the Palma-New York route is part of United Airlines’ largest international growth initiative to date, which will see the introduction of six new destinations and nine additional transatlantic routes in 2025. These will include direct flights from New York-Newark to Bilbao, Palermo, Nuuk, and Madeira, as well as new connections between Washington D.C./Dulles and Dakar, Nice, and Venice.
The continued growth of United Airlines’ operations in the Balearics is supported by local authorities, with the Consell de Mallorca working closely with the airline to strengthen the island’s connectivity with the United States. This collaboration aims to increase Mallorca’s appeal as a year-round destination for international tourists.
With the expected increase in passenger traffic, the tourism and hospitality sectors in Mallorca stand to benefit greatly from this new route. Both local businesses and tourism operators are preparing for the potential influx of American visitors, with increased interest in the island’s rich cultural offerings and picturesque landscapes.
As United Airlines continues to expand its international footprint, the potential Washington-Palma route is a promising step forward for both the airline and the Balearic tourism industry, opening new opportunities for growth and connectivity.
