ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – According to Delta Air Lines, the Delta airplane that flipped and crashed upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport has finally been cleared from the runway more than 48 hours after the crash.
The airline said the removal happened “in coordination with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority and Air Canada – who provided additional recovery experts and specialized equipment.”
21 people were injured when the CRJ-900 flipped upside down upon landing around 2:15 p.m. Monday. 19 have been released from the hospital, airline officials said.
80 people were onboard the aircraft. There were no fatalities.
A child taken to the hospital in critical condition is now reportedly in stable condition.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration say they will send U.S. investigators to assist, as Delta is headquartered in Atlanta.
The flight, which began in Minneapolis, was landing in Toronto despite wintry conditions in the area. Meteorologists reported strong crosswinds with gusts up to 40 miles per hour.
But Toronto Pearson Airport Fire Chief Todd Aitken said the runway was dry and there were no crosswind conditions when the crash happened.
Delta has offered passengers $30,000 each with “no strings attached.”
