The construction of El Salvador’s Pacific Airport has sparked interest from international airlines, with Avianca and Volaris among those considering operations at the new terminal, President Nayib Bukele announced during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony.

Bukele revealed that Avianca has already committed to offering flights from the first day of the airport’s operations, expected to begin in the second half of 2027. “The CEO of Avianca told me that on the first day of the airport’s opening, there will be Avianca flights,” Bukele stated, acknowledging the need for U.S. permits to facilitate routes between the two countries.

Designed to handle 300,000 passengers and 2,000 flights annually, the airport will feature a 2,400-meter runway and two boarding gates in its first phase. Future expansion is planned in subsequent phases.

Ronny Rodríguez, Director of Sustainability and Corporate Development at Volaris, confirmed the airline’s interest, highlighting the airport’s strategic location. “We are evaluating a combined operations strategy for both the Pacific Airport and El Salvador International Airport,” he said, noting the potential benefits for passengers from western and southern Honduras as well.

Avianca CEO Adrián Neuhauser also previously expressed interest in operating at the new terminal, reinforcing its significance as a major infrastructure project in the region.
