Three airlines operating out of Birmingham Airport have confirmed they will launch new routes and boost their capacity this year.

Over the last week Jet2, Wizz Air and easyJet have announced expansion plans at BHX in the form of new routes or added capacity on existing routes.

Passengers will see the impact as early as this summer with a new route launched by Wizz Air to one ‘iconic’ city destination. Wizz Air bosses said the route, launching in June, will give Brits a chance to visit an “iconic” European city on a budget, with ticket prices said to be starting from £31.99.

Wizz Air

Wizz Air will start a new route from Birmingham to Rome Fiumicino on June 16. Rome Fiumicino is Italy’s busiest airport and is the main airport used to access the capital.

Flights will operate three times a week from June 16, just in time for the six-week summer break.

From June 16, flights will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Airline chiefs said flights will be operated using the last-generation Airbus A321neo, the “most efficient and sustainable aircraft” in its category.

Tom Screen, Aviation Director of Birmingham Airport said: “It’s great news that WizzAir has decided to increase its presence at Birmingham Airport with the launch of a new route to Rome. This new route complements the airlines existing routes to: Budapest, Bucharest and Craiova direct from Birmingham.

“Rome is a major European centre for finance, business, and culture, so it is great to have more capacity and choice on this route for our customers.”

easyJet

This week, easyJet announced a new route from Birmingham Airport to a Spanish island that experiences peak temperatures in the 20s all year round.

This is the first time a direct easyJet route from BHX to the Canary Island hot spot will operate. Flights will take off from BHX to Lanzarote for the winter 2025 season which begins in October.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK country manager said that launching a new route from Birmingham to Lanzarote “shows easyJet is committed to extending its reach to new destinations and provides even more choice and variety for our customers’ winter getaway.”

Tom Screen, aviation director of Birmingham Airport said: “Since EasyJet established a base from Birmingham Airport last year, we have been delighted with its continual expansion of routes.

“From domestic short hops to city breaks, the airline is consistently providing new routes that directly cater to our customer’s needs.

“We welcome the announcement of EasyJet’s new year-round service to Lanzarote from October 2025. Lanzarote is a firm-favourite amongst many of our customers and this new route for easyJet, adding extra flights, will allow even more passengers to explore the island throughout the year.”

Jet2

Popular airline Jet2 confirmed they would be boosting capacity on their existing Christmas markets programme in response to “strong demand.”

Jet2 are adding extra services on their flights to Gdansk in time for the Christmas Market 2025 season.

Additional flights will run to Gdansk from December 26 2025 to January 5 2026. Extra Monday and Friday services will operate to the popular Christmas Market destination during this time from Birmingham Airport.

Airline bosses said the programme represents over 50,000 seats on sale in total, and a capacity increase of 19% when compared to Winter 24/25.

This means for the winter 2025 Jet2 will operate flights to seven Christmas Market destinations from Birmingham Airport – Budapest, Cologne, Gdansk, Krakow, Prague, Tallinn and Vienna.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “We are delighted to be putting additional capacity on sale to Gdansk for Winter 25/26 from Birmingham Airport.

The expansion comes in direct response to the strong demand we are seeing from customers for our Christmas Markets programme, and it means we are giving holidaymakers exactly what they want – even more opportunity to enjoy the best festive experiences across Europe this winter. Our Winter 25/26 Christmas Markets programme promises to be our best yet, and we look forward to taking holidaymakers to their favourite winter wonderlands.”
