Some passengers will have to pay for checked bags starting on May 28.
MIDLAND, Texas — Southwest Airlines, known for its “Bags Fly Free” slogan, is making significant changes to its baggage policy. Starting on May 28, some passengers will face a fee for checked bags.
This marks the first time in the airline’s history that it will charge for checked luggage, a move that is drawing mixed reactions from travelers.
For years, Southwest has differentiated itself from competitors by offering free checked bags, but the new policy is causing some passengers to reconsider their loyalty to the airline.
“I’m glad we get to enjoy free bags for the next couple of months, but after that, we’ll be doubling up and sharing suitcases instead of traveling like we used to,” said traveler Lauren Wall. “Everyone used to take as much as they could and took advantage of the two bags, but it’s fine. We’re not worried about it. We’re still going to fly Southwest.”
The airline will still offer some exceptions. Rapid Rewards A-List members and passengers traveling on Business Select fares will continue to receive two free checked bags. A-List members and other select customers will receive one free checked bag. Rapid Rewards credit card holders will get one checked bag credited.
“It’s them trying to keep up with the times and keep things going. I understand, but I don’t like it,” said traveler Dena Colby.
For many, the change raises the question of why Southwest is making this move. Airline officials say the new policy is aimed at driving revenue growth and rewarding the airline’s most loyal customers.
Travelers are expressing frustration with the new fee.
“If they are going to charge for it, I will find the best deals wherever they are,” said passenger Chris Carder.
The airline has also been under pressure to reduce costs and recently announced plans to cut 15% of its corporate jobs as part of a cost-saving initiative.
Southwest remains the largest carrier at the Midland Airport, where it led all airlines with 354,928 flights last year.
While passengers can still check up to two bags for free with their ticket, Southwest has not yet released the prices for the checked bags. The new policy is set to go into effect just before the busy summer travel season.
As the change approaches, many travelers are eager for more clarity on how the new baggage fees will impact their upcoming flights.
