(MENAFN) An American airlines flight with 178 people onboard caught fire on Thursday after an engine malfunction forced the plane to divert to Denver. Flight 1006, originally traveling from Colorado Springs to Dallas Fort Worth, experienced engine vibrations during the flight, prompting the crew to change course. The Boeing 737-800 landed safely in Denver, but while taxiing to the gate, one of the engines caught fire, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Photos and videos from the scene showed passengers evacuating via the plane’s wing as thick smoke surrounded the aircraft. The pilot had alerted Denver air traffic controllers about engine problems before landing but reassured them that it was not an emergency, as reported by CNN.

American Airlines confirmed that all 172 passengers and six crew members safely exited the plane, and 12 people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. This incident adds to growing concerns about aviation safety in the US, following several accidents this year, including deadly crashes in Alaska, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Additionally, issues with Boeing aircraft have also been reported, including a recent mechanical problem with a jet carrying US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
