Asiana Airlines

has scheduled Airbus A380-operated flights from Seoul, South Korea, to New York, the United States, between May and September.

Returning to New York-JFK

As flagged by AeroRoutes, Asiana Airlines scheduled the Airbus A380 to operate one of its daily flights from Seoul Incheon International Airport

(ICN) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport

(JFK). The A380 is potentially expected to operate the route between May 30 and September 30.

According to data from the aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool and as pointed out by AeroRoutes, Asiana Airlines last served flights between Seoul-Incheon and New York-JFK with the type in October 2019.

Then, Asiana Airlines had daily departures on the route, served exclusively by the double-decker, and in November 2019, it replaced the A380 with the A350-900.

Since then, the latter aircraft has exclusively operated up to double-daily flights from Seoul-Incheon and New York-JFK.

According to ch-aviation data, Asiana Airlines has six A380 aircraft in its fleet, all of which are active.

Asiana Airlines’ A380 network

Before Asiana Airlines added the A380

to the Seoul-Incheon – New York-JFK route, the airline’s June plans for the type included 32 weekly flights to four destinations, three of which were in Asia-Pacific.

The destination list included Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), Los Angeles International Airport

(LAX), Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT), and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).

During the month, the airline had scheduled four departures from Seoul-Incheon to Bangkok, double-daily to Los Angeles, and daily to Tokyo-Narita and Taiwan-Taoyuan, according to Cirium’s Diio Mi.

It remains to be seen which destinations will no longer receive the South Korean carrier’s A380s, at least for the upcoming summer season.

However, with Korean Air finalizing the acquisition of a majority shareholding of Asiana Airlines in December 2024, the combined companies have 13 A380s, ch-aviation data showed. The site also indicated that currently, four out of the seven Korean Air’s A380 aircraft are inactive.

In March, Korean Air has only planned 12 weekly flights with the type: five departures to New York-JFK and seven to Los Angeles. By June, that will grow to 21 weekly departures from Seoul-Incheon to Hong Kong International Airport

(HKG), New York-JFK, and Taiwan-Taoyuan, Cirium’s Diio Mi showed.

On March 4, Etihad Airways announced that starting June 24, the airline will utilize its A380 to fly between Abu Dhabi and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Three days later, the Middle Eastern carrier issued travel waivers for passengers who had booked flights with the A380 from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow Airport

As a result, New York-JFK could have up to 49 weekly departures with the A380, which includes Asiana Airlines’ addition. Other airlines operating A380 flights to the airport should be Emirates,

which flies to Dubai International Airport

(DXB) either directly or via Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), and Lufthansa,

which has daily departures to Munich Airport

(MUC).
