“Charging passengers for bags? You shouldn’t be charging passengers for flights,” comedian Drew Lynch said in a clip posted on TikTok.
DALLAS — It’s been a rough couple weeks for Southwest Airlines, with much of the public responding negatively to the Dallas-based airline’s many changes, including charging for bags.
As if the response couldn’t get any worse, a video on TikTok now has gone viral of a comedian mocking the turmoil at the airline on stage at the Laugh Factory.
“Charging passengers for bags? You shouldn’t be charging passengers for flights,” comedian Drew Lynch said in the clip.
Lynch, who was a runner-up on “America’s Got Talent” in 2015, joked that Southwest Airlines now costs the same as other airlines but without a TV screen or a meal or a seat.
“A flight on Southwest is a five-hour timeout,” he said. “You’re a sky trolley of shame and poor people.”
He referred to a ride on Southwest Airlines as a “dehydrated fever dream,” and said he was able to overlook a lot beforehand because he was saving money.
“That’s like if Olive Garden started charging for breadsticks,” he said. “You start looking around, you’re like, ‘oh, it’s a Fazoli’s.'”
Southwest announced last week it would be ending its free bag policy starting May 28.
Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and customers who are flying business select will still get the standard two free checked bags, Southwest officials said. A-list members will get one free checked bag, and Rapid Rewards Credit Card members will get credit for one checked bag.
The airline also said it would release more details about “specific audiences” who could get free checked luggage, including customers who purchase flights through the upcoming Getaways by Southwest packages.
Southwest has not yet said how much each checked bag will cost for customers who don’t meet the exceptions.
