United Airlines is one of the world’s largest carriers in terms of revenue, fleet size, and passengers carried. The mega airline operates a fleet of 1,010 aircraft, of which 785 are narrowbody jets. The airline operates out of eight major hubs in the United States, including Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Denver (DEN), Houston George Bush International (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Washington Dulles (lAD), Newark, NJ (EWR), and the US territory Guam (GUM).
The latest edition in the United Airlines narrowbody fleet is the Airbus A321neo (new engine option), with 31 examples active at an average age of just over eight months. The A321neo fleet at United is configured with 200 seats arranged in three cabin sections. The cabin features the United Next interior and the latest Airbus Airspace concept with larger overhead bins.

The airline operates its latest-generation Airbus aircraft out of most hubs, primarily offering nonstop US domestic and North American routes. Of the eight United hubs, three did not see any A321neo activity this month: Washington Dulles (IAD), Newark, NJ (EWR), and the US territory Guam (GUM). While some hubs have nearly 1,000 A321neo flights scheduled, the three hubs have none. Based on data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, this article looks at where the carrier’s latest fleet is flying from each of its active hubs.

Why United Airlines Strategically Doesn’t Need New York-JFK
Find out why United Airlines chose not to compete for its position at JFK but decided to dominate at EWR, its biggest Eastern hub.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Orlando (MCO): 162 flights
- Houston (IAH): 146 flights
- Phoenix (PHX): 101 flights
- San Francisco (SFO): 95 flights
- Denver (DEN): 83 flights
- San Diego (SAN): 79 flights
- Los Angeles (LAX): 68 flights
Chicago O’Hare sees the most activity, with a whopping 960 flights scheduled on United’s Airbus A321neos this month. These flights offer a combined 192,000 seats, accumulating to over 242 million Available Seat Miles (ASMs). The top A321neo destinations from Chicago O’Hare are Orlando (MCO) with 162 flights (32,400 seats), Houston George Bush International (IAH) with 146 flights (29,200 seats), and Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) with 101 flights (20,200 seats).
Other notable A321neo routes from Chicago are San Francisco, Denver, San Diego, and Los Angeles. United Airlines mostly connects its hubs with these relatively larger narrowbody jets, allowing regional jets to funnel passengers to smaller non-hub airports.

Why Is United Airlines Doubling Down On Denver Airport?
United Airlines undoubtedly has big plans for its hub at Denver International Airport (DEN). Not only has the carrier demonstrated its intention to continue growing its route network from the facility (including new flights launched between Denver and Syracuse which Simple Flying reported on earlier today), but it also could be planning to make the city its new home. Recently, United Airlines purchased a large amount of land at the airport, something which led many to speculate that the carrier could be planning to move its headquarters from Chicago to Denver in the coming months. Regardless of whether this is actually what the airline had in mind for the facility, it certainly does have big plans for growth and expansion at what is arguably its most important hub for connecting traffic. What do you think United Airlines has in store for its Denver operating base?
Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Los Angeles (LAX): 146 flights
- Houston (IAH): 118 flights
- Orlando (MCO): 61 flights
- Chicago (ORD): 57 flights
- Phoenix (PHX): 51 flights
Denver Airport is another major hub that sees a lot of United Airlines A321neo activity, with 613 flights scheduled this month. These flights offer a combined 122,600 seats, accumulating over 122 million Available Seat Miles (ASMs). The top A321neo destinations from Denver are Los Angeles (LAX) with 146 flights (29,200 seats), Houston (IAH) with 118 flights (23,600 seats), Orlando (MCO) with 61 flights (12,200 seats), Chicago O’Hare (ORD) with 57 flights (11,400 seats), and Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) with 51 flights (10,200 seats).

Other notable A321neo routes from Denver are Boston, Fort Lauderdale, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Seattle, each offering a daily departure this month.

With 144 A321neo flights to Denver, the airline offers 28,800 seats, accumulating nearly 25 million ASMs. Chicago O’Hare, on the other hand, receives 118 A321neo flights from Houston, clocking in 23,600 seats and nearly 22 million ASMs. Los Angeles and Las Vegas make another handful of A321neo flights from Houston this month.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Chicago (ORD): 117 flights
- Denver (DEN): 98 flights
Los Angeles (LAX) also sees the two hub airports, Chicago and Denver, with major A321neo operations this month. The airport offers 215 United A321neo flights, offering a combined 43,000 seats, accumulating nearly 58 million Available Seat Miles (ASMs). With 118 A321neo flights to Chicago ‘Hare the airline offers 23,400 seats, accumulating nearly 41 million ASMs. Denver receives 98 A321neo flights from LAX, recording 19,600 seats and nearly 17 million ASMs.

With 97 A321neo flights to Chicago O’Hare, the airline offers 19,400 seats, accumulating nearly 36 million ASMs. Denver receives 27 A321neo flights from SFO, recording 5,400 seats and over 5.2 million ASMs.

The other three hubs
Washington Dulles (IAD), Newark Liberty (EWR), and Guam (GUM) do not see any Airbus A321neo operations this month from United Airlines. While these airports are connected to other major hubs, United Airlines operates other narrowbody jets. For example, the airline offers approximately 150 flights from IAD to Chicago (ORD) this month, operated on a combination of its Airbus A320s, Boeing 737-800, 737-900, and 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

None of these aircraft offer the same capacity as the A321neos. The seats per departure of these narrowbodies range from 150 seats on Airbus A320s to 179 seats on the Boeing 737-900s. A similar trend is observed in flights from Newark (EWR) as it connects to Chicago (ORD) with 12 flights each day. These flights are operated on a range of Boeing narrowbody jets, including 186-seater Boeing 757-200s.
A snapshot of United Airlines Guam International Airport (GUM) operations shows that most frequent flights to Tokyo (NRT) and Manila (MNL) are operated by its Boeing 737-800 fleet. Scheduled flights from Guam to Honolulu (HNL), Hawaii, are operated on United’s widebody Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Flights from Guam to Honolulu have an approximate block time of seven hours and 25 minutes.
