CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Drivers will need to be on the lookout for lane closures on Airline Road between Wooldridge Road and Holly Road.

Construction started on Wednesday and is expected to last until March 28. Northbound, followed by center and eventually southbound lanes will be closed for paving.

Corpus Christi Engineering Services Director Jeff Edmonds explained this is all part of their ongoing rapid-pavement program.

He said the project will happen quickly.

“We’re going to be milling and overlaying all five lanes, and they’re hoping to get one lane done per day that they’re out there working,” Edmonds said.

Edmonds said it will be good to avoid the route since construction could cause delays. The project’s purpose is to refresh the pavement surface and renew the ride quality.

He said that needs to be done routinely, because once pavement gets to a certain condition, it starts to rapidly deteriorate.

“This is more of a preventive-maintenance-type of activity and should put another seven to 10 years of longevity in your pavement,” Edmonds said.

Despite the project beginning Wednesday, it was still a busy day for Jiffy Lube on Airline Road. Ray Rodriguez, the location’s senior general manager, said their location helps.

“We’re kind of fortunate because we’re kind of located in like a triangular area,” Rodriguez said. “So, we get customers coming in constantly from every corner.”

Edmonds explained that utility adjustments could be necessary after paving is done, which includes localized traffic control and should be done by the end of next week. He said lane closures are determined by a traffic control plan so that there is minimal traffic interruption, also asking drivers to do their part by keeping it safe while moving through the construction site.

“Please be a little bit more careful and just plan for a little extra time,” Edmonds said.

Rodriguez said he is happy Airline Road is being worked on, they just need to adjust to it and make sure to keep customers flowing in.
