Canadian travelers are making a statement with their wallets and flight bookings. In response to tariffs enacted by President Trump, many Canadians are choosing to skip U.S. vacations, leading airlines to slash routes to American cities.

Budget carrier Flair Airlines is the latest to make a move, confirming it will no longer operate flights to Nashville this summer. “I can confirm that Flair won’t be flying to Nashville this summer,” said Kim Bowie, director of communications for Flair Airlines. This decision eliminates the airline’s only route to Tennessee and is part of a broader trend affecting Canadian airlines.

Data from Flight Centre Travel Group Canada revealed that leisure bookings to the U.S. dropped by 40% in February compared to the same period last year. One in five customers canceled U.S. travel plans in the previous three months, reflecting a significant shift in Canadian travel preferences.

The impact extends beyond one airline or one city. Air Canada has scaled back flights to Arizona, Florida, and Las Vegas. WestJet reported that Canadian travelers are now opting for destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean instead of the U.S. Sunwing Airlines has dropped all U.S. routes, and Air Transat has reduced service to American cities. Even Porter Airlines admitted it is cutting back on advertising American destinations, recognizing that some Canadian travelers may view U.S. travel unfavorably.

Beyond flight cancellations, the effects of the tariff dispute are visible in everyday choices. American-made products, including Tennessee whiskey, have disappeared from Canadian store shelves. At NHL and NBA games in Canada, U.S. national anthems have been met with boos.

For now, the travel industry is adjusting to this shifting landscape, but whether this trend continues remains to be seen. With tensions still running high, Canadian airlines and travelers appear to be taking a firm stance—one that is being felt in the skies.
