Germany’s Lufthansa Group has declared that, from summer 2025, all ITA Airways flights at Frankfurt and Munich airports will be managed from Lufthansa terminals.
On March 30, 2025, the German airline group announced that this change means ITA and other Lufthansa Group airlines will operate “under one roof” at all the Group’s hubs.
The move follows a previous announcement in February 2025, where the German airline outlined detailed plans for incorporating the newly acquired Italian carrier into its global operations, including consolidating flight operations within specific airport terminals.
Lufthansa noted that this transition at the German hubs includes the entire ITA Airways handling operation, from check-in, gates, service desks and baggage reclaim.
In Frankfurt, ITA Airways will move from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, which is used by the Lufthansa Group. Since ITA Airways will also be flying from gate areas A and B in the future, Lufthansa has said passengers “will benefit from significantly shorter distances and thus shorter transfer times”. Additionally, ITA Airways travelers will be able to reach the Deutsche Bahn long-distance train station with ICE high-speed train connections from Terminal 1.
In Munich, ITA Airways will relocate from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 and its satellite, which is managed by a joint venture between Lufthansa and Munich Airport. ITA Airways passengers will therefore be using the terminal that has repeatedly received five-star ratings from United Kingdom–based consultancy Skytrax.
“This integration gives ITA Airways passengers access to the enormous advantages of the Lufthansa Group, with all its premium airlines and a worldwide route network,” said Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group. “It also gives passengers more direct access to numerous destinations to the Italian market.”
At the other Lufthansa Group hubs in Brussels, Rome, Vienna and Zurich, all Lufthansa Group airlines are now under one roof. For example, Zurich Airport (ZRH) already offers a smooth transfer process for passengers between SWISS and ITA Airways. Furthermore, in recent weeks, the check-in counters for these airlines have been positioned next to each other at most airports they serve together.
ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group airlines are also launching their joint codeshare flights, which can be booked as a single itinerary. Travelers can select from over 100 new codeshare connections within Europe, operated by both ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti).
Consequently, Lufthansa Group passengers can access Italian airports such as Alghero (AHO), Lampedusa (LMP), Pantelleria (PNL) and Reggio Calabria (REG). Additionally, passengers holding a Lufthansa codeshare ticket can now travel to Tripoli in Libya again with ITA Airways reopening the route from Rome’s Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) in January 2025.
Lufthansa Group added that ITA Airways passengers can also use the approximately 130 lounges of the Lufthansa Group and its partners on their travels starting from March 30, 2025. Likewise, Lufthansa Group passengers can now use ITA Airways lounges.
