Does United Need A Hub In The Southeast?
The Southeast is the fastest-growing region of the US, whether it’s the burgeoning cities like Atlanta, Nashville and Raleigh, or the huge influx of new residents to the state of Florida. So it’s a great region for a US airline to have a base.
But only three of the big four airlines do. We all know that Atlanta is a fortress hub for Delta Air Lines, huge in both size and revenue for the world’s most profitable airline. American Airlines has Charlotte and Miami, with the latter being the gateway for its market leadership to Latin America. And Nashville and Orlando are top-performing cities for Southwest Airlines.
But what about United Airlines? Its closest hubs to the region are Houston and Washington DC, leaving something of a gaping hole in its map of hubs. So does United need a hub in the Southeast, and if so, where?
The Boeing 757s
The two flights operated by the carrier’s 757-200 jet from Tampa are to Newark Liberty International (EWR), offering six flights in March with 1,056 seats and 1.1 million ASMs. The aircraft also operates two flights this month to Washington Dulles International (IAD), offering 352 seats and 285K ASMs. The 757-200 fleet is equipped with 176 seats laid out in three classes.
