LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Your surfboard and golf clubs won’t come with any extra fees when traveling to Hawaii.
Hawaiian Airlines announced Wednesday that it will accept sports equipment as standard checked baggage. That includes surfboards, bicycles and golf clubs.
“Hawai’i is synonymous with surfing and many ocean and land-based activities that draw visitors from around the world,” Sandra Wang, product manager for the airline, said in a news release. “We are excited to extend this new benefit to our visitors and kamaina so they can enjoy their favorite sports and hobbies while exploring Hawai’i and anywhere they travel in our network, including Asia, Oceania and the U.S. continent.”
Each piece of equipment must be properly packed in a soft- or hard-sided case designed for the equipment, according to the airline’s baggage policy.
Bike and windsurfing equipment will be accepted up to 70 pounds, and all others will be accepted to 50 pounds. Hang-gliding equipment will not be accepted.
The first checked bag costs $40 when flying between North America and Hawaii. Visit the Hawaiian Airlines website to learn more about their checked baggage policy.
The new policy extends to Alaska Airlines as well after the two carriers entered a merger last year.
