Inter AirportsChina Airlines Chairman Su-Chien Hsieh passed away last week on 16 January. A 46-year veteran of China Airlines, Hsieh led the management team and employees through the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the subsequent recovery that saw the airline report the highest ever revenue in its 65-year history in 2024.

Hsieh joined China Airlines in 1979 as an entry-level financial specialist. His career spanned the Accounting Division, Passenger Sales Division, Sales Manager of Taipei Branch, General Manager of Kaohsiung Branch, Vice President of Taiwan Region and General Manager of Taipei Branch, and Senior Vice President. He was also stationed overseas as the General Manager of Indonesia Branch and Australia Branch, as well as affiliated enterprises such as Abacus Distribution Systems Taiwan Limited and Taiwan Air Cargo Terminals Limited. In 2016, Chairman Hsieh became the President of China Airlines and Chairman of Mandarin Airlines. In 2019, he became the Chairman of China Airlines. He is recognised in the industry for his comprehensive resume and extensive management experience.

Hsieh was involved in the airline industry for many decades. He became very familiar with the international airline market and accumulated a great deal of knowledge and experience of transportation. Hsieh developed a set of strategies and insights for forecasting supply and demand in the market. During his time as the company chairman, Hsieh worked to optimise products even further, to consolidate competitive advantages, and to formulate a more closely integrated network plan. The result has been strong passenger and cargo sales. Hsieh saw employees as the company’s most important asset and successfully completed two rounds of collective bargaining with the China Airlines Employee Union during his term. Under his leadership, the management and employees worked together as one to deliver outstanding results.
