easyJet has announced a new winter route between Bournemouth and Lyon. The service will launch on January 13th, 2024 and operate on a weekly frequency.

easyJet announces Bournemouth-Lyon

The low-cost carrier will launch the route during next year’s ski season and the school half-term holidays. Flights will be available every Saturday until February 24th, which easyJet claims is “perfect for week-long trips” – Lyon (LYS) is located a short drive from leading regional ski resorts, including Tignes, Val d’Isère, Alpe d’Huez, Les 2 Alpes, Val Thorens and La Plagne.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, commented,

“We are really pleased to be announcing a second winter route from Bournemouth to Lyon today, providing more choice for our customers in the South who are looking to visit the Alps region whether that’s for skiing and other winter sports, or a city break to enjoy Lyon’s impressive architecture, cuisine and history.”

The airline has expanded its skiing destination network considerably this winter, adding four other new winter routes – London Stansted to Geneva and Zurich, Southend to Grenoble and Birmingham to Salzburg. It has also restarted its Southend-Geneva service more than three years after halting it due to the pandemic – the route has proven popular over the years, attracting over 94,000 passengers in 2019.

Flights on sale

easyJet has put fares up for sale via its website or mobile app, starting at £23.99 ($29.35) each way. The full schedule (flights are every Saturday) is as follows:

  • BOH-LYS – Departs Bournemouth at 08:35, arrives in Lyon at 11:05
  • LYS-BOH – Departs Lyon at 07:20, arrives in Bournemouth at 08:00

While most passengers will be interested in Lyon’s surrounding ski resorts, the city itself is an excellent draw for a winter city break, offering world-class heritage sites, food and entertainment.

Bournemouth’s growing network

easyJet’s new route will add to its existing Bournemouth-Geneva ski service, first launched in December 2021. The two main operators at Bournemouth Airport are Ryanair and TUI, which both serve an expansive network of European holiday destinations. Since its heyday in the mid-2000s – when it was attracting over a million passengers annually – BOH served over 730,000 travelers in 2022.

Steve Gill, managing director at Bournemouth Airport, said,

“This is great news for passengers and offers them even more choice from their local airport. Winter routes are increasingly popular from Bournemouth and Lyon provides even more connectivity to the Alps this winter.”

Fellow budget carrier Ryanair recently announced a schedule boost at Bournemouth for next summer. The Irish LCC has put flights to Gran Canaria, Majorca and Tenerife on sale, with plenty more routes expected in the coming weeks. Additionally, TUI plans to base a second aircraft at Bournemouth next summer, adding a new flight to Enfidha and upping frequencies on existing routes.
