Summary
- Emirates Airbus A380 diverted to Istanbul due to a suspected medical emergency onboard the flight EK19 from Dubai to Manchester.
- Flight diversions can be caused by factors such as challenging weather conditions, medical emergencies, technical problems with the aircraft, and disruptive behavior onboard.
- Passengers may experience delays and missed connections during flight diversions, while pilots and flight attendants must adjust their schedules accordingly.
An Emirates Airbus A380 aircraft operating between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Manchester International Airport (MAN) made an emergency landing at Istanbul Airport (IST), Turkey, on September 23, 2023, according to Flightradar24.com.
Details of the incident
The airline’s A380 made the diversion approximately three hours into the flight and landed at Istanbul Airport. The aircraft spent approximately more than two hours at the Turkish airport before continuing on its journey to Manchester, the United Kingdom.
The reason for the emergency landing was a medical situation involving a passenger on the airline’s flight EK19, according to RadarBox.com. Simple Flying reached out to Emirates for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
The four-engine double-decker reached its final destination at 10:24 PM local UK time. The aircraft involved was the 7.2-year-old A380 quadjet, registered as A6-EUO, according to Planespotters.net. It is worth noting that the airline’s A380 can accommodate a total of 615 passengers in its two-class configuration. Currently, Emirates has a total of 119 A380s in its fleet and is the world’s largest operator of the type.
Factors behind flight diversions
Flight diversions are an inconvenience for all parties involved. Passengers encounter delays and potential missed connections, while pilots and flight attendants must adjust their schedules.

Weather plays a significant role in causing flight diversions. Pilots are well-informed about anticipated challenging weather conditions at their intended destination. To prepare for unexpected situations, flight dispatchers establish contingency plans in case the flight crew cannot land at the planned airport due to adverse weather conditions. Extra fuel is loaded prior to departure to ensure the aircraft can safely hold and reach a designated alternate airport in the event of bad weather conditions.
Another reason leading to flight diversions is medical emergencies onboard. If the crew is unable to manage medical emergencies on their own, the flight will often be rerouted to seek necessary medical attention.
Technical problems with the aircraft contribute to the reasons for emergency landings. These technical issues can include engine failures and cabin pressure problems, among others. Also, flights may divert in response to disruptive behavior onboard the aircraft. Incidents involving unruly passengers who pose a threat can prompt flight diversions.
