The Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus has announced the launch of six new routes from Monterrey International Airport (MTY) to the United States between January and July 2024. These routes are going to be opened now that Mexico has been upgraded to Category 1 status by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) earlier this month.

New routes

Yesterday, we published an article looking at Aeromexico’s increased operations between Mexico City and the United States by December 2023. Now, Viva Aerobus has made a public announcement of the future launch of six new routes to different cities across the United States.

Viva Aerobus will start flying to Denver (DEN), Austin (AUS), Orlando (MCO), Miami (MIA), San Francisco Oakland (OAK), and New York (JFK) next year.

A look at the new services

The route to Denver from Monterrey is going to start on January 25, 2024. It will have two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays, departing from Monterrey at 10:05 local time and reaching Denver at 12:05. The return service will leave at 13:35, landing at 17:15.

Viva Aerobus’ service to Austin, which was first announced back in 2021, right around the time the FAA downgraded Mexico’s safety rating, will begin on March 22. It will have four weekly departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Departures from Monterrey will take place at 11:00, while departures from Austin will be at 14:35.

On May 9, Viva Aerobus will begin the route to Orlando. The service will have three weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, departing from MTY at 08:35 and from Miami at 14:50.

Viva’s service to San Francisco (Oakland) will begin on July 1, 2024, with two weekly flights on Mondays and Fridays. The service will depart Monterrey at 09:35 and Oakland at 14:10. Finally, Viva Aerobus will give more details about the Monterrey-New York route later.

Betting on Monterrey

Viva Aerobus began its history in Monterrey, Mexico’s most important city in the north. It is currently the only airline with a connectivity hub in the city. Juan Carlos Zuazua, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, said,

“These nine new routes mark a milestone in its national and international connectivity. Those to the United States are designed to serve the world’s largest international air travel market with low-cost options that truly make it easier for people to visit their family and friends, vacation, or do business.”

Launching these new routes comes after a year of historic growth for Viva in Monterrey. In 2023, the airline has added 15 routes to and from Monterrey, beginning service to Mexicali, Bogotá, and Puerto Escondido a few months ago. It also resumed seasonal services to Cozumel and Ixtapa Zihuatanejo.

By 2024, the airline will be operating 49 routes to and from Monterrey, including 12 to the United States, one to Bogotá, one to Havana, and 35 domestic routes within Mexico. Viva already has 28 aircraft dedicated to operations in this hub.
