Summary
- American Airlines is introducing new routes to Tulum, Mexico, offering more travel options for passengers to explore ancient ruins and beautiful beaches.
- The airline will operate four daily non-stop flights to Tulum from three US airports, providing enhanced connectivity to the Riviera Maya.
- American is also applying to launch a non-stop service between New York and Tokyo, which would make it the only US carrier offering direct flights between the two cities.
American Airlines is introducing three new routes between the US and Mexico’s Tulum International Airport (TQO), offering its passengers more destinations and travel options for summer 2024. Separately, the carrier has also applied to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to launch a non-stop service between New York John F Kennedy (JFK) and Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND).
Three routes to Tulum
American Airlines passengers can prepare to explore ancient ruins, lush jungles, and white-sand beaches with the carrier’s new Tulum service. From March 28, 2024, the airline will operate four daily non-stop Boeing 737 flights from three US airports, offering enhanced connectivity to the Riviera Maya.
Flights will be operated throughout the year, building on the carrier’s record winter Cancun (CUN) service. It operates nearly 40 peak-day flights to 18 US destinations from nearby CUN. The airline will fly to Tulum from Charlotte (CLT) with one daily flight, Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) with two daily flights, and Miami (MIA) with a daily flight. American’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning Brian Znotins said,
“American continues to enhance our comprehensive global network with more nonstops to destinations our customers want to visit. With more flights to Tulum from the US than any other airline, American will offer convenient nationwide connectivity to this popular vacation gem on the Riviera Maya.”

Connecting New York to Tokyo
American is also looking to expand its intercontinental network, with a new route linking Japan to the US. It applied to the DOT to launch a year-round service with one daily frequency. Flights will be operated with the Boeing 777, and if approved, it will be the only US carrier connecting New York to Tokyo directly.

“American looks forward to presenting our competitive application to provide new and enhanced service to Tokyo’s convenient Haneda Airport,” said the airline’s Vice President of Regulatory and International Government Affairs, Molly Wilkinson. This will complement the non-stop service currently operated by American’s oneworld partner, Japan Airlines (JAL). The proposed schedule is as follows (all times local):
- JFK-HND: 10:00 – 13:05+1; Boeing 777-200
- HND-JFK: 15:05 – 15:10; Boeing 777-200
American currently has three routes linking Japan to the US. It flies from Tokyo Haneda to Los Angeles (LAX) and Dallas and from Tokyo Narita (NRT) to Dallas with the B787 Dreamliner. At 5,884 NM (10,897 km), HND-JFK will be the airline’s longest route between the two countries, adding an East Coast gateway and more access to one of the world’s largest financial hubs.
