United Airlines is set to relaunch its seasonal service connecting Washington Dulles to the Scottish city of Edinburgh. Having operated the service over the summer months this year, the carrier is set to relaunch the service from April 2024. Initially, the service was not expected to resume until May 3rd.

Operating every day of the week, the United will send its Boeing 757-200 to and from Edinburgh, with the capacity of up to 176 passengers in both business and economy class.

Direct flights to Edinburgh

Uniteds scheduled to Edinburgh will facilitate easy connections at Dulles into the carrier’s more comprehensive domestic and international network, with the outbound service timed to depart IAD at 22:25. UA978 will then shuttle passengers across the Atlantic and into Edinburgh the following morning at 10:35. The flight has a block time of seven hours and ten minutes.

The return service will depart from Edinburgh just after lunch at 12:35, with a flight time of eight hours and five minutes. This will mean a mid-afternoon arrival into the United States capital at 15:35.

Edinburgh Airport now has a substantial selection of carriers for hops across the pond, which, in addition to United’s Washington service, also sees year-round flights to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and seasonal services to Chicago O’Hare (ORD).

More international carriers in Edinburgh

In addition to United’s growing network, other options on hand for Edinburgh-bound passengers include Air Canada direct from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Delta Air Lines, with a year-round service to New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), and seasonal services to Atlanta (ATL) and Boston (BOS).

JetBlue is set to visit Edinburgh in May next year as part of their growing European expansion. Alongside new flights to Dublin, Edinburgh will kick off on May 22nd with a daily service. JetBlue will deploy its Mint-equipped Airbus A321neo fleet on flights to Edinburgh, with the premium service offering a significant upgrade to its usual operations. Flight schedule below:

The remaining transatlantic carriers in Edinburgh are Virgin Atlantic, which operates seasonal flights to Orlando (MCO), Florida, and Westjet, with its summer connection to its base at Calgary (YYC).

Edinburgh’s seasonal service will complement the growing number of transatlantic options available from Washington with the Star Alliance carrier. United serves Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Frankfurt, Geneva, London Heathrow, Munich, Paris, and Zurich year-round to Europe alone. Additionally, seasonal services to the European continent are more leisure-focused and include Athens, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Lisbon, and Madrid.

Stepping aside from United, other European operators at Dulles include Aer Lingus to Dublin, Air France to Paris Charles de Gaulle, Austrian Airlines to Vienna, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic to London Heathrow, Icelandair to Reykjavik Keflavik, SAS to Copenhagen, Swiss Air Lines to Zurich (commencing March 28th), TAP to Lisbon, and Turkish Airlines to Istanbul.

Seasonal services include Brussels Airlines (to Brussels), Iberia to Madrid, and Norse Atlantic to London Gatwick.
