CLEVELAND, Ohio – Want to fly someplace new this summer?

How about a dozen new places?

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is preparing for a huge influx of new nonstop flights in the coming week – perhaps the largest increase in destinations that the airport has ever experienced in such a short period of time.

Frontier Airlines, which opened a crew base in Cleveland in March, is responsible for most of the growth – adding 11 new cities to its lineup of destinations from Hopkins in a single week, starting with new service to Austin, Savannah, Salt Lake City and Baltimore on Thursday.

Then on Friday, Sun Country Airlines makes its Cleveland Hopkins debut, with new nonstop service from Cleveland to Minneapolis.

The Akron-Canton Airport, too, has some new service to celebrate – with the airport’s first-ever route to Los Angeles International Airport. Breeze Airways’ new service to LAX launches May 23.

Bryant L. Francis, Cleveland’s director of port control, said the new flights at Cleveland Hopkins are a function of the region’s continued economic strength. “Airlines respond to demand with increased seat and flight capacity, aided by our ongoing efforts to market CLE to airlines and travelers alike,” he said. “That results in greater travel options in addition to increased employment within the airport community, which further fuels the local economy.”

To accommodate its growing service at Hopkins, Frontier recently increased the size of its check-in counter and doubled the number of gates it uses to four, all in the A concourse.

Here’s a recap of the new flights launching from Northeast Ohio airports in the coming days, including the days of the week they’re offered. Reminder: None of the new routes is daily, which can make rescheduling flights due to weather and other issues a challenge.

In what is likely not a coincidence, Sun Country launches its service the same day Frontier starts flying the route. Sun Country’s route will operate Sunday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Note: Delta Air Lines also flies nonstop between Cleveland and Minneapolis.

Launching Thursday, May 23

Breeze Airways launches nonstop service from the Akron-Canton Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. The route will run three times per week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. This is the first time Akron-Canton has had nonstop service to LAX.

In addition, last month Frontier added new nonstop service from Cleveland to New York LaGuardia Airport. The route runs daily.

Finally, Frontier’s 2024 CLE expansion has already recorded its first casualty. The carrier’s new service between Cleveland and Montego Bay, Jamaica, which launched in March, will end in late June due to poor sales.
