The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recorded a new record for the number of passengers screened at airports in the United States (US) over a single day.

According to TSA, its officers screened 2,951,163 travelers on May 24, 2024, as the Memorial Day weekend getaway commenced.

The new record broke the previous one by more than 40,000 passengers that was set on November 26, 2023, the Sunday following Thanksgiving.

“TSA Officers have set a new record for most travelers screened in a single day! On Friday, May 24, 2,951,163 individuals were screened at checkpoints nationwide, surpassing the previous record on Nov. 26, 2023,” TSA wrote on social media.

TSA are continuing to advise passengers to arrive at airports early over the rest of Memorial Day weekend to avoid disruptions to flights.

A spokesperson for the TSA also shared details about the new record, writing on social media: “If you flew yesterday, congratulations, you were part of a record-setting day! @TSA officers screened more people at airport security checkpoints nationwide yesterday (May 24th) than any other day in our 22-year history—2,951,163 individuals were screened!”

TSA has predicted that over 18 million passengers will travel through US airports between May 24 and May 29, 2024.

More than 6,000 US flights were delayed by early evening on May 24, 2024 on the East Coast.
