Emirates has launched a new route to South America, deploying its Boeing 777-300ERs between Miami and Bogota, Colombia. This is the carrier’s fourth route to South America and one of many fifth-freedom routes.

Emirates, one of the biggest airlines in the world and the biggest international airline worldwide, has expanded its footprint in South America. While the carrier flies nonstop from its hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Brazil, it serves other South American destinations via fifth-freedom services. This means that the route is operated between two points, not home to an airline’s operations.

The new route from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Aeropuerto Internacional El Dorado in Bogotá, Colombia, is another fifth-freedom route. A few months ago, the Gulf carrier announced it would expand its network by flying from Miami to Bogotá, providing competition for the other carriers already connecting the two cities, especially as it is the only carrier to offer first class on the route. As of today, Emirates will fly the route with its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, capable of carrying 354 passengers in a three-cabin configuration.

The inaugural flight had several Emirates executives onboard, like Nabil Sultan, Executive Vice President of Passenger Sales and Country Management, and Salem Obaidalla, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations—Americas. In addition to the executives, several members of the media flew from Dubai to Miami, where they were met by more staff and Colombian Vice Ministers, Ambassadors, and other distinguished guests.

In Bogotá, the flight was welcomed with a huge celebration that included traditional Colombian dancers, cake, and a symbolic gift exchange. Several ambassadors and authorities from the Colombian aviation authority attended the ceremony.

“Bogotá’s status as a key leisure and business destination makes it a gateway we have long wanted to serve, and the new flights will become a conduit to enhance trade flows, improve market access and open pathways for investment across a number of sectors between Colombia and the UAE. We are also excited to provide our premium services between Miami and Bogotá and to introduce a First Class offering for the first time-ever on this popular route.” – Nabil Sultan

Sergio Paris Mendoza, Director General of Aeronáutica Civil de Colombia, added that Colombia has never been connected to the Middle East before. Now, through the new route, the governments and airlines will look to increase tourism between the two countries.

Codeshare agreement with avianca

A few weeks ago, Emirates announced it was launching a codeshare agreement with avianca, Colombia’s largest airline. Though the Miami-Bogotá flights are not included in the agreement, routes going through Spain and England are. Emirates now has agreements with more than 15 airlines worldwide, allowing for seamless travel for its passengers.
