New Pacific Airlines, the carrier meant to transform Anchorage into a one-stop wonder for travel between Asia and North America, has launched its latest domestic US route, connecting Ontario, California, to Reno, Nevada.

Set to operate twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, the Boeing 757 carrier will work between Southern California and Nevada’s third-largest city. It offers tickets one way for $49 during its black Friday sale.

Reno’s first non-stop to Ontario

New Pacific Airlines announced the new route in September, set to join alongside it’s new route from ONT to Nashville. With the new service, Reno Taho International Airport (RNO) is reporting continued growth since the thaw of subdued demand for travel through the COVID-19 pandemic. The Northern Nevada airport now says passenger levels have lifted more than 5-10% compared to 2019.

While attracting new carriers and connections is great for any airport, maintaining them is another story. Reno Tahoe Airport Authority president and chief executive officer Daren Griffin reiterated this in his statement to the Reno Gazette-Journal:

“This is our first nonstop to Ontario, California, and this east L.A. location offers quick and easy access to the inland SoCal areas like San Bernardino, Riverside, and more. The challenge now is to hang on to the new route “and make it thrive and grow. That is our responsibility as people who live and work in Northern Nevada and Reno is to spread the word about New Pacific Airlines.”

7H711 / 775

For the inaugural service, New Pacific flight 7H711 departed from Ontario International Airport at 08:46, just a whisker behind its scheduled departure time of 08:30. The flight took off in a westerly direction across northern Pasadena, Santa Clarita, and Bakersfield while reaching its cruising altitude of 26,000ft. On its descent into Reno, the aircraft did a sharp U-turn before landing at the Nevada airport, touching down at 09:47, 13 minutes ahead of the proposed arrival time 10:00. A total flight time of one hour and one minute.

For the return journey, 7H775 departed bang on time, at 12:04, for yet another quick hour hop back to Ontario. I was touching down at 13:08. Total flight time of one hour and three minutes.

N627NP

One of the carrier’s four Boeing 757-200 aircraft operated the first Reno flight. This aircraft carried the registration N627NP, serial number 27808. The 28-year-old aircraft originally took its first test flight on March 13th, 1995, and was first delivered to US Air on March 24th, 1995. It had a colorful life with US Air, US Airways (both under N630AU, then N206UW), and American Airlines.

From here, it was taken into Northern Pacific Airways possession, taking on the registration N627NP, which was subsequently name-changed to New Pacific Airlines in the second half of this year. Two Rolls-Royce RB211-535 E4 engines power the aircraft.
