Lufthansa announced that the group’s newest airline, Lufthansa City Airlines, will begin flying with an Airbus A320neo, with the carrier scheduling its first flight on June 26, 2024, flying between Munich, Germany, and Birmingham, the United Kingdom (UK).

Replacing Lufthansa on flights to BHX

According to Lufthansa, City Airlines will begin commercial flights on June 26, with flight VL2508 between Munich Airport (MUC) and Birmingham Airport (BHX) being operated with an Airbus A320neo. The German airline said that passengers could look forward to the proven Lufthansa customer experience while flying with one of the most modern and efficient aircraft within the short and medium-haul segment.

Jens Fehlinger, the Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines, stated that the new airline was committed to successfully positioning itself in the short and medium-haul segment from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and MUC on flights within Europe.

“A major investment in the future that will strengthen Germany as an aviation location and create numerous attractive jobs.”

Data from the aviation analytics company Cirium showed that while in June, Lufthansa is still scheduled to operate 10 flights from MUC to BHX, which is two itineraries fewer than in June 2023, by July, Lufthansa will only operate six flights on the route, while Lufthansa City Airlines will take over flying of six itineraries from MUC to BHX.

In addition to flying to BHX, the Lufthansa City Airlines A320neo has been scheduled to take over flights to Bordeaux Airport (BOD), Bremen Airport (BRE), Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN), Dusseldorf Airport (DUS), and Hannover Airport (HAJ).

Expanding Lufthansa City Airlines operations

Since flights have been available for booking since April, Lufthansa City Airlines will also begin operating flights with an Airbus A319ceo to Bordeaux Airport (BOD), Hamburg Airport (HAM), and Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).

According to ch-aviation data, Lufthansa City Airlines already has four aircraft in its fleet: three Airbus A319ceo aircraft, registered as D-ABGH, D-ABGK, and D-ABGP, and one A320neo, registered as D-AIJI. While the three A319ceos were previously operated by Eurowings, Lufthansa’s low-cost subsidiary, the A320neo was previously flown by Lufthansa CityLine.

In addition to the Airbus A319ceo and A320neos that Lufthansa City Airlines is scheduled to operate, the newest Lufthansa airline will begin taking deliveries of Airbus A220-300 aircraft in 2026, further expanding its fleet and operated types.

Feeder network for Lufthansa

When Lufthansa announced that customers were now able to book Lufthansa City Airlines flights in April, the company emphasized that passengers would be able to book fares on feeder services and direct flights from/to MUC.

At the time, Fehlinger stated that the group’s newest airline was contributing to the future viability of Lufthansa’s hubs, namely FRA and MUC. According to the Lufthansa City Airlines executive, the airline was driving forward Lufthansa’s renewal and strengthening its planned growth in long-haul traffic.
