Operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1 remain suspended following the canopy collapse incident on Friday (June 28) morning, which claimed one life and injured eight others. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced on Saturday that Terminal 1 will stay closed until further notice.
Terminal 1, which serves domestic flights including those by IndiGo and SpiceJet, has temporarily shifted all operations to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. In a statement shared on X, Delhi airport assured, “Flight operations at Delhi airport are normal and operating from Terminal-2 & 3 only. All flights from Terminal-1 have been shifted to Terminal-3 and Terminal-2.”
Airlines issue advisory for passengers
IndiGo and SpiceJet issued advisories to their passengers, directing flights originally scheduled at Terminal 1 to now depart and arrive at Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Passengers were advised to check their flight status through WhatsApp, SMS, or Email before heading to the airport.
Expressing urgency for resolution, a passenger at the airport stated, “We are facing time issues. We want the government to resolve these issues as soon as possible.”
DGCA, BCAS, CISF, Delhi Police investigating the accident
DIAL has formed a technical committee to investigate the cause of the canopy collapse. In its initial statement, DIAL attributed the incident to heavy rains and winds overnight, which led to the partial collapse of the canopy at Terminal 1’s old departure forecourt around 5 am. Rescue operations were promptly conducted, prioritising the evacuation of all individuals from Terminal 1.
DIAL confirmed collaboration with relevant agencies including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Delhi Police, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assess the situation and restore normalcy.
The statement further disclosed that while four vehicles were damaged, immediate medical assistance was provided to the injured individuals at Delhi Airport’s Medanta Centre. Those requiring further medical attention were transferred to ESI Hospital and Indian Spinal Injury Centre, later referred to Safdarjung Hospital. Regrettably, one fatality was reported.
DIAL has pledged support to the affected individuals and families, announcing compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the deceased’s family and Rs 3 lakh each to those with minor injuries.
