Avelo Airlines has made one of the biggest announcements in its three-year history and the biggest route network expansion announcement. The airline announced 18 new routes, two of which will be the first international routes.
Biggest route announcement ever
Avelo Airlines flew for the first time in April 2021 and has made significant strides since then, creating a unique network with routes not served by other carriers. Though it has faced some challenges and has exited some markets due to not making a profit on some routes, the airline has not allowed these challenges to deter it from pushing forward. One of the unique announcements made earlier this year was that Avelo would begin serving Lakeland, Florida, and would be the first airline in more than a decade to do so.
Simple Flying reported in March that Avelo was launching in Lakeland and that the airline had requested authorization from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to fly to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, though the destinations were not specified. Those destinations were revealed today, but not from Lakeland. Starting this November, Avelo will fly from Hartford to Cancun and Montego Bay, Jamaica. Each route will be operated twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Today’s announcement includes new routes from Lakeland, Hartford, Charlotte, and Wilmington. Hartford will receive seven new routes, including the two international destinations, all of which will be served twice-weekly. Lakeland will also have seven new routes, including service to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Six new routes will be launched from Charlotte, including Lakeland and Wilmington, while Wilmington will have two new routes.
“The expansion we are announcing today is the most substantial in our airline’s three-year history. Avelo’s purpose is to Inspire Travel and the addition of 18 new routes and our first two international destinations will make getting where our Customers want to go easier than ever. Couple this with our industry-leading reliability and it’s no surprise over five million people have chosen to fly Avelo. Adding more airplanes and destinations, I am very excited about the momentum and growth we are seeing across our business. And with three consecutive profitable quarters, Avelo is positively positioned for even more growth in the future across our network.” – Andrew Levy, Chief Executive Officer, Avelo Airlines
Opening new crew bases
With the expansion of its route network, Avelo plans to open two additional bases on the East Coast, one in Hartford and the other in Lakeland. This will bring the airline’s total number of bases to eight, following last year’s that Las Vegas would have a crew base. The base will opened in September 2023 in Las Vegas, and Hartford and Lakeland will open in November.
