Travelling by plane involves many variables that can affect the overall experience — whether it’s the legroom, the quality of in-flight snacks, or the potential proximity to a crying baby. Now, IndiGo, India’s largest low-cost airline, is set to introduce an unprecedented measure to enhance the comfort of women passengers.

A new era of comfort for women travellers

IndiGo has announced a new policy that will allow women to view the gender of seats already booked on a flight and choose to sit next to another woman if they prefer. This new feature is set to be rolled out from Aug 2024. When booking, seats occupied by women will be displayed in pink (yes, a bit of a cliché), helping women easily identify and choose their preferred seating. Male passengers, however, will not have access to this information.

Voice of the customers

This policy is a first in the aviation industry, though similar options have been available on trains and buses in India for some time. The idea to implement this feature on flights came from a survey that asked women what would make their travel experience more comfortable. It’s a refreshing move that highlights the value of customer feedback.
