Toronto-based airline

Porter Airlines

serves Canada’s largest city from its home at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. While its recent growth has seen it serve the city from Toronto Pearson as well, the carrier has continued to emerge as the next big player in the Canadian aviation market.

It operates from three hubs, Toronto City, Toronto Pearson, and Ottawa, with focus cities including Halifax and Montreal. It has a fleet of 68 aircraft and currently serves 32 destinations in both Canada and the United States.

Powering the airline’s success has been a fleet of Canadian-built De Havilland Canada DHC-8-400 turboprop aircraft, which have suited perfectly for the level of demand on its regional and inter-city services; however, more recently, the airline has been reborn into a new era of connectivity, with the acquisition of bread new,

Embraer E195-E2

aircraft, which has seen the airline reach further across Western Canada, to include Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria, while also introducing new trans-border services to Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Fort Lauderdale (to just name a few).

A bit of Porter Airlines’ history

Robert Deluce, now the executive chairman of Porter, proposed creating a regional airline using turboprop aircraft in the early 2000s to serve major cities in Canada within the range of Toronto.

Operating from Toronto Island means that the carrier could focus on business travelers, who usually pay more for the luxury of flying into an airport within minutes of the city’s central business district.

Historically, it has been connected to the city by a ferry, but Toronto Island Airport has been connected by an underwater pedestrian tunnel since 2015.

Porter was launched in 2006 and has continued to add more destinations from Billy Bishop. After acquiring new jet aircraft in 2021, the airline announced its plans to start flying from Toronto Pearson and expand its network deeper into

Canada

, the

United States

, and eventually the Caribbean.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline was effectively grounded and reached an agreement with the Canadian Government for loans up to CA$270.5 ($200) million, which were then used as a capital reserve for the airline during the pandemic recovery period.

The airline is known for its friendly service. All passengers onboard are treated to free drinks and alcoholic beverages, snacks, and either window or aisle access.

A flight pass makes a world of sense for the most frequent traveler. Flying more means saving more. Simple Flying decided to look at how this unique Canadian carrier continues to woo customers onboard and what its Porter Flight pass could mean for you:
