Tourism Minister Denise Charles-Pemberton has announced that United Airlines will commence direct service to the island beginning February 15, 2025.
The once-weekly flights will connect Newark, New Jersey, to Dominica’s Douglas Charles Airport, a significant milestone in the country’s air accessibility.
“Today is a proud day for all Dominicans,” Minister Charles-Pemberton declared, emphasizing the historic nature of this achievement. The announcement comes after years of strategic planning, substantial investments, and extensive dialogues with various stakeholders, including the Dominican diaspora.
This new route is part of Dominica’s ambitious goal to attract 500,000 visitors by 2030. The government has been actively forging partnerships with major carriers like American Airlines and now United, in anticipation of the completion of a new international airport.
The Minister highlighted the broader implications of this development, stating, “This new direct flight is not only about convenience for tourists. It’s about making life easier for our own people.” She emphasized how the improved connectivity will benefit Dominicans traveling for business, education, or family visits.
The announcement is seen as a testament to Dominica’s recent infrastructure investments, including upgrades to Douglas Charles Airport and runway improvements.
Pemberton views United Airlines’ decision to serve Dominica as validation of these efforts and a sign of the country’s progress.
The government plans to focus on establishing direct connections to more distant destinations once the new international airport is operational. The Minister assured that this development is part of a broader vision for “people-centred growth” that aims to benefit all Dominicans.
Ticket sales for the new United Airlines service have already commenced, offering travellers and locals alike an easier way to access the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean” starting early 2025.
