American Airlines gave its domestic first-class menu a fresh upgrade earlier this year, and it’s nothing like the bland meals people used to poke fun at. They’ve teamed up with Chef Ellie Krieger, who’s not just a chef but also a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. This collaboration is all about serving food that’s packed with flavor and some serious health perks. Krieger has crafted a menu that not only tastes good but also focuses on boosting the immune system and delivering real nutritional value.
Something new
American Airlines has finally revamped its meal options for the first time since 2019. Like many other airlines in the oneworld alliance — and globally — American tweaks its menu depending on the route. If you’re flying within the US, meal service is typically offered on flights longer than 900 miles. Meal baskets are provided, though, on flights that range from 500 to 899 miles.

A helpful tip when flying with American is to order your meal in advance. The airline doesn’t stock a lot of extra meals, so planning ahead ensures you get your preferred choice rather than whatever’s left. You can browse the menu and make your selection in the American Airlines app as soon as you book your flight.
The new menu has been around for a while now and is accessible to ticket holders. View From The Wing gave us a sneak peek at six new dishes past January. These new meals, which started being served on all domestic flights as of February 14, 2024, include some exciting choices, such as:
- A Mediterranean bowl
- Chicken breast with Mojo sauce paired with poblano black bean rice and plantains
- Penne pasta topped with a plant-based ‘meat’ ragù and ricotta.
American Airlines’ onboard food culture
American Airlines has also spiced up its new domestic first class menu with some fresh options. You’ll now find an edamame and mandarin orange slaw salad, chicken parmesan with strozzapreti pasta in a chunky tomato sauce, and a vegetable enchilada served with red rice and green chili sauce. However, it’s still up in the air whether the fan-favorite short rib will make a return on future flights.

It’s interesting to note that, since 2019, American Airlines has been working up with the James Beard Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to promoting and preserving the best of America’s food culture. As the foundation’s official airline partner, American has brought this culinary expertise to both their in-flight dining and at flagship lounges at select airports, giving travelers a taste of elevated dining even before they board.
Drinks and special meals
American Airlines promotes its lounge menu as featuring chef-inspired dishes, locally sourced ingredients, signature wines, craft beers, and hand-crafted cocktails. The airline prides itself in offering a range of beer, wine, and spirits to pair with its in-flight meals.
However, the onboard experience doesn’t quite match up. In fact, American Airlines made news when it was revealed that they were cutting back on their wine selection and ditching printed wine lists altogether in first and business class, per The Drinks Business. Interestingly, despite this, the oneworld alliance was still recognized as the best airline alliance for its wine selection.
For passengers with specific dietary needs, American also provides specialty meal options. Kosher, Halal, and Hindu meals are available, while diabetic passengers can enjoy meals tailored with reduced sugar and special carbohydrates to help manage blood sugar. Those with gluten sensitivities aren’t left out either, with meals crafted without wheat, rye, barley, or oats.
Final thoughts
American Airlines’ revamped domestic first class menu marks a significant shift in the airline’s approach to inflight dining, moving beyond the typical airplane meal to offer something truly curated. With Chef Ellie Krieger at the helm, the new offerings are not only designed for flavor but also include health-focused benefits like immune support.
From plant-based dishes like the penne pasta with ‘meat’ ragu to flavorful options like chicken with Mojo sauce, there’s something for every palate. The careful attention to variety ensures that whether you prefer classic comfort foods or something a bit more modern, your meal is an enjoyable part of the journey.
This shift represents great strides to accommodate a wide range of dietary preferences and needs, including:
Pair that with a selective wine program, craft beers, and handcrafted cocktails, and the airline is raising the bar on luxury inflight service. This thoughtful balance between indulgence and nutrition reflects a commitment to enhancing the travel experience— whether you’re a regular in first class or savoring a rare splurge, your time in the air promises to be as comfortable as it is delicious.
