Dramatic surveillance footage has revealed the chaotic moment an American Airlines plane inhaled a cargo container into its engine, shredding it. The incident occurred shortly after the aircraft arrived from London at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport last Thursday, according to ABC7.

In the video, the plane is seen halted on the tarmac when a cargo vehicle carrying four containers zooms past it. Suddenly, three containers get dislodged and tumble towards the aircraft. One container gets sucked into the engine, resulting in debris scattering into the air, while the other two land further away on the tarmac.

The detailed account of the incident was posted on X by user ‘Windy City Wheelman’ (@WindyCityDriver), along with images.

Images from the scene showed remnants of steel lodged in the engine. Fortunately no injuries were reported, but the Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident.

Responding to the post, an individual wrote, “Saw many damaging things in my 16 years on the ramp. Feel bad for the jetway operators that caused canceled flights.” Another user commented, “I used to drive that area all the time. Was the container empty, assume it was.”

According to the New York Post, a similar incident happened last Tuesday at the Chicago airport when a piece of luggage container collided with a Jet Blue aircraft, causing damage to the plane’s engine cover. This happened as the plane was moving towards the gate after arriving from Boston.
