Austrian Airlines
has filed its winter schedules for its flights to North America, including the United States, with the airline significantly reducing its flying program to the continent in October 2025.
Reducing flights
According to the latest data provided by the aviation analytics company Cirium, Austrian Airlines will make deep cuts to its October 2025 schedule from Vienna Airport
(VIE) to North America and, consequently, the US. AeroRoutes was the first to flag these changes.
The carrier plans to fly to only one non-US airport during the month, namely Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport
(YUL). Preliminary plans showed that Austrian Airlines will reduce its weekly flights to the airport by one to six.

The airline should keep operating flights to the Canadian city with the Boeing 767-300ER
. Ch-aviation data showed that it has three 767-300ERs in its fleet.
Other cuts include potential reductions on itineraries to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport
(JFK, one fewer weekly flight), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD, one), and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS, three).

Exiting Los Angeles
However, the most significant change should be that Austrian Airlines could cease flights from/to Los Angeles International Airport
(LAX), with Cirium data showing that the carrier will not operate any flights from Vienna to Los Angeles beyond October 12, 2025.
Austrian Airlines’ cuts could be replaced by Lufthansa
, which will add five weekly flights to Los Angeles. If the latter airline scheduled 14 weekly flights – seven each from Frankfurt Airport
(FRA) and Munich Airport
(MUC) – in October, during the same month in 2025, it should fly 19 weekly itineraries to Los Angeles.
The five additional weekly flights should depart from Frankfurt Airport (FRA), with the carrier operating the additional quintet of weekly departures with an Airbus A340-300
, complementing the route’s other quadjet aircraft, the Boeing 747-8.

Meanwhile, the only two airports that should keep the same schedule are Newark Liberty International Airport
(EWR) and Washington Dulles International Airport
(IAD), two hubs where its Star Alliance
partner, United Airlines
, has major US domestic and near-international networks.
Even then, on a weekly basis, seats should be reduced by 7.8% year-on-year (YoY), with Austrian Airlines introducing the Boeing 787-9
to replace its Boeing 777-200ERs
on flights between Vienna and Newark.
In general, the airline’s incoming 787-9s will be replacing its aging 767-300ER and 777-200ER aircraft.
Ch-aviation data showed that in addition to the three aforementioned 767-300ERs, Austrian Airlines has six 777-300ER and two 787-9 aircraft, with an additional nine on order. The first 787-9 reached the carrier in May.

Changing aircraft types
In addition to these changes, Austrian Airlines should shuffle the aircraft types operating flights from Vienna to North America.
For example, the airline utilized the 767-300ER on flights to Boston in October. During the same month in 2025, Austrian Airlines plans to fly the route with the 777-200ER until October 26, when it plans to switch to the 787-9.
The 787-9 should also temporarily replace the 777-200ER on flights from Vienna to Newark between October 15 and October 25, while from October 28, the latter could replace the former on departures to New York-JFK.

Furthermore, on flights from Vienna to Chicago, Austrian Airlines will switch the 787-9 for the 777-200ER sooner than in October 2024. While this year, the 777-200ER replaced the middle child of the 787 aircraft family on October 28, in 2025, that should happen on October 16.
Lastly, Austrian Airlines should phase out the 767-300ER from flying to Montreal on October 27, with the 787-9 taking over and increasing the airline’s capacity on the route from that day forward.
