Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) has launched an open international architectural competition to select the design for a new arrivals terminal at Vilnius Airport (VNO).
The winning concept will shape the new terminal and its surrounding area, according to a press release published on November 19, 2024.
“We are already in a period of major change, but in parallel we want to make every future infrastructure change at the capital’s air gateway,” said Arnas Dūmanas, Head of the Development Department of Lithuanian Airports. “It is for these reasons that we believe that an international architectural competition of ideas for a new arrival terminal and its environment is the best way to understand what is available to choose from and what to have in the future.”
Lithuanian Airports is inviting architects to create designs for a new arrival terminal, integrated with the new departure terminal, the reconstructed central square, and the future Rail Baltica underground train station.
The competition is being held in partnership with the Lithuanian Union of Architects. Architects can submit designs up until mid-February 2025.
In early 2025, a jury will evaluate all the entries based on qualitative criteria. The jury will consist of Laura Kairienė, Chief Architect of Vilnius City, Mariia Grachova, Architect, Director of the Brussels Office of Chapman & Taylor (UK), Tom Holtmann, Architect, Partner and Project Manager at Nordic Office of Architecture (Norway), and Rolandas Palekas, Architect, Head of the Paleko ARCH studio and representatives of the Lithuanian airports.
The winner of the architectural competition will be invited to enter open negotiations for the signing of a contract for the preparation of the working design of the terminal and its accesses, the press release continued.
The new arrivals terminal is planned to be operational by the end of 2028.
