An air alert has been issued after Russia launched a missile and drone strike at power infrastructure across Ukraine, targeting several cities.
Herman Halushchenko, Ukraine’s Energy Minister, posted on Facebook early on November 28, 2024, saying that the country’s energy sector “is under massive enemy attack”.
Halushchenko stated that Russian forces are attacking energy sites across Ukraine. There are reports of rockets being launched in various parts of the country, along with explosions occurring in the western areas of Rivne and Lutsk.
According to a report from the Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA) on Telegram, Russia reportedly used air-launched cruise missiles and different types of drones for the attack. The Russian Aerospace Forces fired X-101 missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers, targeting Kyiv from multiple directions.
KCMA added that debris fell in two areas of the capital, Dniprovskyi and Darnytskyi. One business had its doors and windows broken, and a truck was also damaged.
“Our energy workers and all services are working as hard as possible to restore normality to life to help people,” Oleh Syniehubov, the Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, stated in a Telegram post. “Thank you to everyone who is now helping and doing their part to restore the power supply.”
As a result of the attack, electricity has been turned off in some cities as a safety measure. This includes Kyiv, Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Volyn regions.
“Ukrenergo, the transmission system operator, has urgently started emergency power cuts,” Halushchenko said. “As soon as the security situation allows, we will clarify the consequences.”
According to Ukrainian authorities, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are now without electricity due to the Russian attack. The Rivne Regional Military Administration confirmed that more than 280,000 people in the Rivne region alone have been affected.
