A Norwegian Air Shuttle Boeing 737 has suffered a runway overrun as it landed at Molde Airport (MOL) in Norway. The aircraft eventually came to rest beyond the runway’s paved surface just 15 meters (50 feet) from the edge of the sea, upon which all passengers were safely evacuated via the aircraft’s emergency slides.
The incident unfolded on the evening of December 19. 2024, as the aircraft arrived at Molde Airport following a short domestic flight from Gardermoen Airport (OSL) in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. Flight data obtained from Flightradar24 shows that Norwegian flight DY430 departed from Oslo at 18:04 local time and was operated by one of the carrier’s 63-strong fleet of Boeing 737-800s registered as LN-NIP.
The flight climbed normally to 32,000ft (9,756m) and followed a north-westerly track direct to Molde. According to the Aviation Herald, the top of descent and initial approach phases were uneventful and routine with the aircraft beginning its descent into Molde at 18:39. At around 19:00 the flight was cleared to land on runway 25 at Molde which has a Landing Distance Available of 1981m (6,500ft). Weather conditions at the time were reported as good visibility but also gusty winds with snow and rain showers in the vicinity of the airfield.

Having touched down on the runway at 19:03, the aircraft failed to stop on the paved surface and overran the end of the runway 07 threshold. The plane eventually came to rest approximately 150m (500ft) beyond the turning circle at the end of the runway just 15m (50ft) from the water’s edge of the Fannefjord, situated at the western end of the airfield.
All 165 passengers were subsequently evacuated from the stricken aircraft using the emergency escape slides. Airport emergency services were quickly on the scene and assisted with the evacuation. According to one report, one passenger observed that the aircraft appeared to conduct a late touchdown before skidding off the runway overshoot end. However, the airline reported the aircraft went off the runway due to weather conditions, strong winds, and a slippery runway.

The aircraft involved in the incident is 11.2 years old having been delivered to Norwegian Air Shuttle in July 2022. The aircraft was originally delivered to Garuda Indonesia in October 2013 with whom it flew until August 2021. The aircraft is leased from AerCap and seats 189 passengers in a single-class layout. Damage caused by the aircraft during the overrun is still being assessed and the aircraft remains at Molde.
