According to medical authorities, fourteen people survived the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane that went down on Wednesday with 67 people on board in western Kazakhstan.
The Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane was operating between Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, and Grozny, the capital of Russia’s Chechen Republic, when it crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, officials said.
The aircraft came down near the city of Aktau in western Kazakhstan, according to the Kazakh Ministry of Emergency Situations.
“So far, 14 injured people have been taken to the regional hospital,” five of whom have been placed in intensive care, the local branch of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health said in a statement.
“The passenger plane connecting Baku to Grozny crashed near Aktau. This aircraft belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines,” Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport stated in a press release.
“According to initial information from the Azerbaijani side, there were 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board,” it added.
Azerbaijan Airlines confirmed that the aircraft involved was an Embraer 190, which “carried out an emergency landing.”
“Details about casualties are still being clarified. According to initial estimates, there are survivors,” Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations emphasized.
