Flights to and from Aberdeen Airport have been cancelled or diverted to Edinburgh Airport after issues with de-icing planes.

The Met Office issued a yellow snow and ice warning for much of the country on Monday, with the north east, Highlands, Orkney and Shetland, the Western Isles and western parts of the mainland mainly affected.

Forecasters warned up to 10cm of snow could fall in some areas, with more than 100 schools shut on the first day of term after the winter holidays.

Aberdeen Airport apologised to customers for the “frustrating delays”, after flights were impacted by the snow storms.

Many flights were cancelled, delayed or diverted to Edinburgh Airport as staff worked to de-ice runways and taxiways for aeroplanes.

However, Aberdeen Airport said that the de-icing of planes was managed by airlines and their contracted ground handling teams.

The airport remains open, but travellers are warned to expect disruption to journeys.

A spokesman for Aberdeen International Airport said: “We understand how frustrating delays can be, especially during challenging weather conditions.

“While the airport is responsible for de-icing runways and taxiways to ensure safe take-offs and landings, the de-icing of individual aircraft is managed by the airlines and their contracted ground handling teams.

“Aberdeen International Airport has remained open and operational due to hard work of our team in maintaining the airfield.”
